About Waterford Surf Life Saving Club -
What is Surf Life Saving?
Surf Life Saving originated in Australia in the early 1900s in response to a large number of drownings at local beaches near Sydney. Surf Life Saving is a new and growing sport here in Ireland; it combines many different sporting disciplines such as swimming, running, kayaking and surfing with life saving skills to create a very exciting and competitive sport. The sport involves the use of many different types of lifesaving crafts and rescue equipment including international skis, rescue boards, can buoys, fins etc. The Sport of Surf Life Saving is quite distinct in that the disciplines in which people compete are directly related to elements of life saving. It is the only sport in the world that combines both humanitarian goals with elite competition.
Who are Waterford Surf Life Saving Club?
As a group of lifeguards and athletes we have came together in the summer of 2005 to form a new surf lifesaving club in Tramore, Co. Waterford. Waterford SLSC helps to train the lifeguards of tomorrow and to promote water safety awareness. The time given by every member of our club is an investment in the safety and well being of all members of the public. Our chosen sport of Surf Lifesaving combines different sporting skills and disciplines, which include: swimming, surfing, kayaking, and running. Waterford has competed, and has had wonderful success in this up and coming sport in Ireland. Our Junior team won the Irish Nationals in 2000, 2003 and again in 2004. Our Senior girls team won in 1999 and 2001 and again in 2007. We have also had members of our team represent Ireland on the International stage, in the European Championships, World Championships and other international events.
Although Surf Lifesaving is a relatively unknown sport here in Ireland, it is one of the main sports in countries, such as New Zealand and Australia. Because Ireland is an island, it is naturally aquatic-oriented, and Waterford, as a maritime county has a great history as a centre for the whole area plethora of water sports. With the support of our local community, we, as a club, hope to thrive in such a unique and growing sport and at the same time return valuable service back to our community.
This Club aims to raise awareness of Water Safety and promote the Sport of Surf Life Saving in our Country.
Waterford SLSC is always interested in talking to potential sponsors, so if you are interested in us and the possible benefits we can give each other, don't hesitate to contact us via our email; info@waterfordslsc.com
